Innovative projects in Spain transform waste into sustainable materials, leading the circular economy in the country.
The circular economy is revolutionising the way we manage waste, and in Spain, technological advances are leading this transformation. From bird feathers turned into biodegradable plastics to the recycling of wind turbine components, innovations in recycling are marking a before and after in sustainability and waste management. The Unlock project, coordinated by the Cidetec research centre, has found an innovative solution for waste from the poultry sector. Cidetec uses bird feathers to produce biodegradable plastics. Aina has developed edible coatings for food, while the Recyclink project recovers valuable materials from electronics. EoLO-HUBs, for its part, reuses wind turbine components. Despite these advances, the Cotec Foundation warns that many EU states will not reach the recycling targets set for 2025.
